Last Night a Barred Owl

Last night a barred owl
called so close to the house
at first I thought he had
gotten in somehow, or at
least was perched on
the branch closest the window.
When his mate called back,
he flew off to her,
and I fell back to sleep knowing
all was well with them,
but in my dream,
the phone rang and rang and
rang, and finally went dead.
