Today's poem is by Ruth Fainlight

In Ladbroke Square

The oldest trees have
boughs strong as elephants' legs
bark gnarled as their hide.

Under their branches
generations of children,
insects, flowers, vines.

(In the trees' shadow
children tear blossoms apart,
rip the wings off flies.)
