Today's poem is by Andrea Potos

Modern Conversation

I overhear them everywhere—
it's like, and I'm like
spilled and smeared into every other
sentence, so that I can't help
the urge to wipe up,
toss out, vacuum
speech like some manic
housekeeper, wordkeeper.
If only this meant they
were on the verge

of similes, drawing closer
to poetry, releasing a grip
on the prosaic and expected,
making each ordinary thing become
something other and something more,
newly conceived, awesome.
