Today's poem is by Jim Daniels

Elegy for the Exquisite

Loneliness trumped loveliness
in that card game we invented

but never named. One letter
is all it took. The tree out back

refuses to be sad, despite
dropped leaves brittle beneath it.

October yearns for November
to better translate your dis-

appearance. What's left
after all the bluffing on love

with the best of inventions?
Oh, those hearts looked so good

on you.
