Animal
        —after Psalm 73

The dog's hunger,
the untrustworthy dream,
pacing the warrens

of our last
viable mythologies,
this is the real work

YOUR bright whispers
muffled, almost
damp, almost warm

as if YOU were mouth
against my ear.
The real work

is taming the whirring
distance between us—

Come close.
