Today's poem is by Derek Sheffield

Stewards at Work

It would be fine to save a few trees,
especially those limber ones that bow
whenever we send our storms.
Some bushes, too. Sedges and grasses
clump agreeably. If we keep those black birds,
our kiss marks on their shoulders
will linger like the coals of that first fire,
remember? Rocks and pebbles, yes,
and boulders with sparkly dots. Night
should continue covering up and day
go on exposing. Let's not forget
those dusky gnats. And that white-faced dog.
Let's have her pace a little longer the length
of every fence, then stop and perk her ears
toward something always coming
that never quite arrives.
