About Gratitude

Here I am away from home
in the company of women.
The ocean is at a loss for horizon,
but always comes forward
at the shoreline. And we

are in the company of women.
The assertion of waves washes the sand,
then relaxes, laying it down,
and taking it back to the heart.

In the company of women
glass floats and sand dollars, wet
with wave and rain, remain together
after the tide moves off. White froth
turns amber and thick,
like the language of gratitude.

And we are here,
just a small gathering of women,
writing under the gray clouds.
Tiny birds sing in the distance.
