Today's poem is by Patty Seyburn

The Glass Need Not Persuade Me

This, the age my mother
started lying and I, the age
that believed her.

Now, I am tempted
by subtraction. I avoid
figures of ascent and descent,

the view from here all too scenic.
I don't like nature much,
landscape's betrayals and lessons

of perspective and am
mad at the patriarchs
who shortened our lives

with their profligate behavior—
it's true, you can
ruin it for everyone,

but even if you keep making
that face, it will not stay
that way.
