Today's poem is by Elaine van der Geld

Postcard: Wish You Were Here

That time at the Wet 'n Wild by the roar-
ing highway: the chlorine and exhaust,
the greedy seagulls, congealed ketchup,
pasty white boys, unbroken baseball caps
perched too high, the girls with tall bangs and fat
babies—tiny mouths stuffed with french fries and Coke.
We ran and we ran and we ran, threw our
muscled bones to the ride, slid wet, slick plastic.
Legs wet, feet bleeding, you yelled,
This is the best day of my life!
But probably it's beyond memory,
some utopian time.
Or maybe now. I'm in it. Walking down
University Ave, past weeds, past condo ads.
