Today's poem is by David Caplan

Grateful

Grateful, always the day's first word,
the first word of the first prayer,
mumbled like an apology. Today it means

We still have clients, though they can't pay.
Just past the fountain a runner presses
two fingers to his throat and feels

how quickly his blood grows stupid,
how it forgets ten circuits around the city's
best park, timed on a wristwatch.
