Today's poem is by Elizabeth S. Wolf

After She Knew

My mother did a lot of research.
She chose all new doctors. My mother
joined support groups and signed us
all up for newsletters.

My mother moved to accessible housing,
with mobility aids, within two years of the
conspiracy collapsing. My mother named her
crutches: Fuck and Shit.

My mother enrolled in a clinical trial.
They gave her chemo to knock out her
immune system. She lost her hair and
never walked again. She spent two months
in a rehab hospital. They spread lined sheets
over her bed and chair, in case of accidents.

My mother pinned the sheet to her
shoulders like a cape, threw off her
wig, and raced down the hallways
full tilt boogie in her cherry red Rascal.

My mother was a rocking superhero.
