Today's poem is by Shann Ray

The Gesture
for Jan Palach, son of the Velvet Revolution

On the surface
he was no exception.

We all cast lots
against the ties of the regime.

Do you agree with the friendly
help of the army? he asked.

We all answered no
and drew straws

until he nodded,
walked to the public square

and lit the match,
his body

made of
light.
