A Theater Near You

They say the end is coming, coming soon.
They're making preparations, learning how
to sound a droning dirge or victory tune.

They say that grace has made their souls immune,
while other faiths their lord will not allow.
They say the end is coming. Coming soon

to opening night or matinee afternoon,
a final cut: Apocalypse Right Now.
To sound a droning dirge or victory tune,

their angels clear dry throats, prepare to croon
a soundtrack for a final holy row.
They say the end is coming, coming soon,

to battlefields already littered, strewn
with severed limb, with child, with olive bough.
To sound a droning dirge or victory tune,

they point to cryptic scripture, ancient rune,
divine approval of their bloody vow.
They say the end is coming, coming soon,
and sing a droning dirge, their victory tune.
