Today's poem is by Sherman Alexie

Dear Humpback Whale

You are a barnacled planet afloat
In the sea, but your ancestors had legs
And walked upon the earth,

Which gives me—a smaller mammal—the hope
That my descendents will someday grow wings
And become strange birds.
