Today's poem is by Chris Preddle

Grass

The grass anticipates the cows,
spires and aspires
upwards like an aspirational consumer society,
to be consumed.

No. It is the grassfed wisdom
of the cows, their sobriety
in judgment, for which the grass suspires.
Cows do not say, 'It is the cause, it is the cause.'

'No,' the aspirant grasses say, and aspirate
each word, 'it is the kind forbearance
of kine, themselves an image ... '

I am greener than grass and imagine
how once before
I aspired to love or sufferance or something in that spirit.
