Gnosticism as a Modern Construct

Late one afternoon, we watched the dragonflies
near the dock that now sank below,
instead of standing over, the lily pads.

They enraptured us with the way
they needled the air, until a swallow
caught the one we were watching and was gone.

One possibility is that we
simply go on praying; another
that Christ walked into the sea.

At other times, we watched the swallows,
graceful as they dove after insects invisible
save for the ripples they made.
