Alan Shapiro published his first volume of poetry, After the Digging, in 1981. The next five—The Courtesy, Happy Hour (winner of the Robert and Hazel Ferguson Memorial Award and the Poetry Society of America's William Carlos Williams Award), Covenant, Mixed Company (winner of a Los Angeles Times Book Prize), and The Dead Alive and Busy (winner of the Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award)—were published by the University of Chicago Press, followed by Selected Poems with Carcanet Press, and Song & Dance and Tantalus in Love with Houghton Mifflin. Houghton Mifflin will also publish his new book, Old War, in 2008. He has written two prize-winning memoirs, The Last Happy Occasion and Vigil (University of Chicago Press); a work of criticism, In Praise of the Impure: Poetry and the Ethical Imagination (TriQuarterly Books); and two translations, The Oresteia and The Trojan Women (forthcoming), both with Oxford University Press. Other honors include a Guggenheim Fellowship; two fellowships ill poetry from the National Endowment for the Arts; the American Academy and Institute of Arts arid Letters Writer's Award; the O. B. Hardison, Jr., Poetry Prize from the Folger Library; and a Lila Wallace -Reader's Diqest Writers' Award. An American Academy of Arts and Sciences fellow, he is the W. R. Kenan, Jr., Distinguished Professor of English at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
