Today's poem is by Patty Seyburn

Perfection Letter (viii)

The senior v.p. in charge of h.r.
was somewhat "p.o.'ed" at your
unwillingness to express an opinion
on Rodgers and Hammerstein v.
Rodgers & Hart and you refused
to take the chair's cues (the blatant
"cut off your head" gesture) and
pursued this line of discussion
when the woman was emphatic
that "I Could Have Danced All Night"
was unimpeachable. This apparent
inability to "suck up" might make you
a heavyweight contender in some green
departments but we are past
our salad days and need a sworn
oath to the platform. Your research
was quixotic but friendly—who knew
Milton an Albino? Brahms longed
for a bicycle?—and your cover "note"
of one syllable per line persuaded
some that the virtue of patience
should be lodged in the circular file
directly next to slovenliness.
