Today's poem is by John Whalen

Fiber Optics

I am the president of everything you see.
If you look out the window, I am president
of the trees. I am the president of this diner

and everyone loves me. That they don't show it
is petulance. Bad humor.
Because you kissed me, I am president

of the entire school of architecture of my kind of face.
Of this kind of landscape: arrows of spruce,
rising hill. Apartment building and field.

I am the newly-elected president of Liberty Lake.
President of fiber optics. Light, lasers, small children.
President of coffee, of stumbling downhill.
